SLOT...what's that?We are the Servant Leaders of today. For those of you who don't know, servant leaders are the people who believe in the idea that in order to lead, one needs to serve first. SLOT is a student initiative that was given shape by us to bridge the ever widening gap between corporate companies on the one hand, and NGOs, organizations and schools working towards the welfare of less privileged kids on the other. We believe that the students today can contribute effectively towards this cause.
We realized that the problem of disposal of e-waste is one that is very prevalent among companies, regardless of whether they were small sized, mid-sized or large corporates. Many companies are genuinely interested in providing a helping hand for a noble cause but are too tied up in their busy schedules. SLOT strives to remove this gap between companies and NGOs by building a firm platform that would last for many years to come. It is a known fact that companies, very often, have computers and laptops that get outdated due to the pace at which technology is developing. Those computers or laptops would have become obsolete for them, but they are nothing less than unimaginable luxuries for less-privileged kids in schools and NGOs. E-waste, which has proven to be a major hassle for companies, if channelized and assembled in the right way could not only greatly benefit less-privileged kids but also protect the environment against a whole lot of e-junk and SLOT aims to be the medium by which this can be made possible. As they get introduced to the world of computers, children will build positive attitudes toward technology that will pay dividends for the rest of their lives. Computers not only fascinate kids and can draw their full attention, which often results in a deeper focus and concentration, but also help children to be in control of their experience, to set their own pace, and to select the level of challenge with which they feel comfortable. Other than the numerous benefits for kids, the computers can be productively used by the NGOs and schools in organizing various events for their kids. SLOT aims to collect what companies have to dispose and deliver them to the people who need them the most. One laptop per child is definitely a distant dream for India, but the SLOT stories are definitely a step in that direction and they would make it more of a potential reality in the years to come! |
